Why use plywood under parquet?
Plywood is used as a base layer under parquet for several reasons:
- Surface leveling: Plywood has a high degree of flatness, which provides a smooth surface under parquet. This is important to avoid unevenness and deformation of the floor surface.
- Noise reduction: Plywood can act as a sound-insulating material, absorbing noise and vibrations. This is especially important for first-floor apartments or multi-story buildings where noise can be an issue for neighbors.
- Increased strength: Plywood strengthens the floor structure and helps prevent deformation under loads. This is especially important in commercial buildings where the floor may bear significant weight.
- Reduction of expansion and contraction: Parquet can expand and contract depending on changes in temperature and humidity. Plywood helps minimize this effect on the parquet, thereby extending its lifespan.
First, a concrete screed is made. The surface is leveled using a construction of wooden battens or self-leveling floor. The flat concrete surface should be primed, insulated if desired, and waterproofing should not be forgotten. Plywood sheets are used as an underlay.
Plywood creates an additional barrier between the concrete and parquet board, preventing the parquet from absorbing moisture from the concrete. Also, the adhesion of parquet to plywood is much better than to concrete, preventing the parquet from peeling off and increasing the lifespan of the flooring.
Humidity fluctuations are unacceptable for flooring. Therefore, plywood is a suitable material that keeps the parquet board dry. The homogeneity of materials (both made of wood) significantly reduces the possibility of parquet deformation.
Additional benefits of a plywood base for flooring:
- Additional thermal insulation layer.
- Easy and quick to work with.
- Cheaper than alternative options.
Which plywood to choose for parquet?
When choosing plywood for parquet, consider several factors:
- Thickness of lamellas. The thickness of the plywood sheet and the parquet board must match. They should be approximately the same.
- The purpose of the room – residential or non-residential – relates to the environmental friendliness of the plywood.
- Need for increased moisture resistance.
Moisture-resistant FC plywood with a width of 10-12 mm is the best choice for a parquet floor base or laminate in a bedroom or children’s room. It is produced using urea glue, which provides moisture resistance without emitting toxic fumes.
For non-residential premises, FSF plywood under parquet is well-suited. It is more expensive than FC plywood because it has enhanced water-repellent properties. However, the glue contains phenol, making it less environmentally friendly. For subflooring in hallways and office spaces, it is an optimal option.
The origin of the veneer from which the plywood is made can also be considered. Sheets made of birch veneer do not delaminate during processing – sanding and planing are performed easily. Coniferous species are less susceptible to pest attack.
What to use for installation? Screws and special glue for plywood under parquet. Using single-component water-dispersion glue, you can install a durable floor in a budget-friendly and high-quality way.
Sanding plywood under parquet
Sanding plywood under parquet is necessary for several reasons:
- Surface leveling: Plywood may have roughness and unevenness that can affect parquet installation quality. Sanding can help level the surface, remove roughness, and create an even base for flooring installation. The absence of even minimal cavities prevents excessive glue use.
- Fixing defects: Plywood may have chips, scratches, and other damage that can affect parquet installation quality. Sanding can help remove these defects and create a smooth base.
- Surface preparation: Before laying parquet, the surface should be clean and dry. Sanding can help remove any glue, paint, or varnish residue from the plywood surface and prepare it for parquet installation.
Where to buy plywood under parquet? Material price
“Win-Wood” company offers plywood under parquet of different grades, thicknesses, and quality levels. We work with manufacturers who confirm the quality of their products with appropriate certificates and years of fruitful cooperation.
We recommend choosing FC or FSF 10-12 mm plywood for parquet. Thinner plywood will not provide the required strength for the floor. Thicker is unnecessarily expensive, as there is no need.
On the pages of the catalog of the “Win-Wood” company, you can find samples of plywood for parquet with descriptions of the parameters and characteristics of the products. The price depends on the grading, size, and thickness of the sheets.
