Furniture plywood: value and popularity
Furniture plywood is a type of plywood used for making furniture, decorative items, and other interior products. It consists of several thin layers of veneer glued together under high pressure and temperature. This creates sheets of varying thickness with high strength and resistance to deformation, making it a popular material for furniture production.
Main properties and qualities of furniture plywood:
- Strength. Plywood consists of multiple layers of wood (veneer) glued under pressure, making its structure very strong and resistant to tearing and warping.
- Lightweight. Furniture plywood is very light and easy to work with. This makes it suitable for creating complex and refined furniture designs.
- Water resistance. Plywood has high water-repellent properties, making it suitable for use in rooms with high humidity.
- Uniformity. Plywood has a homogeneous structure, allowing it to maintain its shape and size for many years.
- Acoustic insulation. Due to its structure, plywood has good sound-absorbing properties, making it suitable for creating soundproof panels and other acoustic products.
- Affordability. Furniture plywood is relatively inexpensive, making it accessible to a wide range of consumers.
Main uses of furniture plywood
- Making furniture frames: manufacturing side and back walls of cabinets, dressers, chests, and other furniture.
- Making tables and countertops: plywood sheets are used for making kitchen, writing, or office table tops, as well as for their finishing for a more aesthetic appearance.
- Making doors: plywood is used for making furniture doors, such as for cabinets, kitchen sets, etc.
- Making children’s furniture: plywood is considered a safe material for making children’s furniture: beds, desks, chests, and tables.
- Structures: furniture plywood can also be used to make other wooden products such as wooden floors, panels, boxes, and various decorative elements.
Grades and types of furniture plywood
Three-ply and five-ply plywood are best suited for furniture production.
Three-ply furniture plywood consists of three layers, with the central layer positioned perpendicular to the plywood surface. This provides additional strength and resistance to deformation during use. Such plywood is usually used to create various furniture elements such as shelves, and back walls of cabinets.
Five-ply furniture plywood consists of five layers, with the central layer also positioned perpendicular to the plywood surface. This makes the sheets even denser and stronger. Five-ply plywood is often used to create large furniture elements such as tables, beds, and doors.
The price of three-ply and five-ply furniture plywood may be higher since the production of multi-layered plywood requires more time and resources. However, the strength of multi-layered plywood ensures longer and more reliable use in the furniture industry.
Three-ply and five-ply furniture plywood are made from different types of wood, mainly birch. They can also have different quality grades, which are determined by the number and size of defects on the plywood surface.
Furniture plywood of grades (B/B and BB/BB) is a high-quality grade of furniture plywood that is characterized by high strength and an attractive appearance. Grade B/B plywood has no visible defects. In grade B/B (I grade), only small streaks are allowed. Grade BB/BB plywood (II grade) – like grade I plywood, has no visible defects except for 1-2 healthy knots. Furniture plywood is made from birch material.
The price of higher-grade furniture plywood may be higher than other types of plywood, as the production of such plywood requires the use of high-quality wood and additional processing. However, the high quality and beautiful appearance of higher-grade furniture plywood justify its higher price.
